The published averages are far apart, so here they are side by side:

Source and dateRangeAverageStated basis
This Old House, updated 10/09/2026$600 to $5,800; $3 to $29 per foot of material$3,200; $16/ft of materialTypical 2,000-square-foot home (about 200 feet of gutter)
This Old House seamless, updated 10/13/2026Not given here$1,984200 feet, seamless
Bob Vila, modified June 9, 2023$622 to $1,677$1,135HomeAdvisor data; no length stated
Angi seamless, "2025 Data"$650 to $1,700$1,150No length stated
HomeAdvisor seamless, undated$658 to $1,796$1,227No length stated

This Old House's $3,200 average is nearly three times the Bob Vila, Angi and HomeAdvisor averages. It's tied to a typical 2,000-square-foot home (about 200 feet of gutter), and those three state no length, which may explain part of the gap, though none of the pages says so. This Old House's own seamless page averages $1,984 for 200 feet. Bob Vila also lists about $1,200 for a one-story house and about $2,000 for two stories.

Per-foot prices by material

Copper$20$25 to $40+$15 to $25
Zinc$40$10 to $29$35 to $45

This Old House's labor section says a seamless installation averages "about $5 per linear foot", which doesn't square with its own table. Angi lists K-style at $8 to $15 per foot installed, half-round at $9 to $17 installed, and says 6-inch adds $3 to $5 per foot. Sources differ on what a per-foot price includes, so ask whether yours covers labor and removal.

Worked numbers: a house with 200 feet of gutter

Assumptions

200 feet of K-style gutter, using Angi's installed K-style figure. National numbers, not a local price.

  1. K-style at $8 to $15 per foot: $1,600 to $3,000.
  2. 6-inch instead of 5-inch, adding $3 to $5 per foot: another $600 to $1,000.
  3. Old gutter removal at Bob Vila's $0.65 to $0.85 per foot: another $130 to $170.
  4. Total with all three: about $2,330 to $4,170, before any fascia repair or guards.

Note that this total runs well above the averages of $1,135 to $1,227 in the first table, and it brackets This Old House's $3,200. The disagreement isn't only about which source you read. It's also about what gets counted.

What putting it off can cost

The cheap line on this page is the cleaning: an average of $167. HomeAdvisor says water damage to soffit and fascia is "typically caused by clogged gutters or poor roof drainage" and costs $10 to $23 per foot, which is $400 to $920 along a 40-foot eave. Now look at what's further down the table. HomeAdvisor lists dry rot repair at $500 to $4,000 and a one-story fascia and soffit job averaging $2,500. Fascia is the board your gutter hangs on, and it's the wood that gets wet when water gets behind the gutter. One dry rot repair at those prices equals about 3 to 24 average cleanings.

Repairs add up too. HomeAdvisor's average repair is $395, and Bob Vila warns that frequent repairs can exceed the cost of replacing the system. Old galvanized steel rusts after about 20 to 25 years. And an old trade forum thread warns that leaving drip edge off puts the roof deck at risk.

Numbers that don't add up

  • Copper: $15 to $25, $20, or $25 to $40+ per foot, depending on the page.
  • Zinc: $10 to $29 against $35 to $45.
  • Guards: the per-foot type prices don't add up to the $1,481 whole-home average over 200 feet. Micro-mesh at $2 to $4 per foot would be $400 to $800, and the $7 to $12 installed figure would be $1,400 to $2,400.
  • Full replacement: HomeAdvisor says a full replacement falls "between $1,600 and $2,175 per job", which doesn't line up with the averages above.

Figures labeled for Huntsville

Two national sites publish Huntsville-labeled numbers. They're shown here for what they are, with their limits, and neither is a local contractor's price:

  • HomeBlue (April 29, 2025): $4.50 to $9.90 per foot; seamless aluminum $5.40 to $9.40; aluminum on 200 feet at $1,080 to $1,890, a top figure that's slightly off its own rate. Approximate, with no method described, and the site earns from its own matching service.
  • This Old House, Huntsville (undated): average about $1,150, about $3.87 per foot, aluminum $9 per foot, cleaning $0.96 per foot. The per-foot figures don't agree with each other.

What to look for in a written price

  • Total length, and the size, shape and material of each run, including thickness.
  • How many downspouts, and where each one discharges.
  • Whether removal and hauling are included.
  • How fascia rot will be priced if it turns up.
  • Payment schedule. Alabama's Attorney General warns: "NEVER make a full payment or substantial down payment up front."
  • The name, address and phone of the contractor, plus work description, dates and total cost.

Who these numbers don't help

If your house is in a historic district, has copper or zinc already, or has box gutters built into the cornice, national per-foot figures may tell you little. Box gutters with damaged soffit or cornice may favor replacement, per HomeAdvisor, and that's a different kind of job. Get a price from someone who has looked at the house.

Permits

No local page read says whether gutter work needs a permit, so ask: Huntsville Inspection at 256-427-5331, Madison Building at 256-772-5644, or Madison County Inspection at 256-746-2950. See the hiring guide.
