What a cleaning involves
Someone gets up to the eave, clears leaves and sediment out of the trough, and checks that water runs through the outlets and down the downspouts. A cleaning is also the cheapest inspection your gutters will ever get. While the trough is empty, it's easy to see a sag, an opening seam or soft wood. One guard maker's blog advises inspecting fascia when cleaning, and Bob Vila says to inspect after big storms too.

How often to clean
| Your situation | Published frequency | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average house | 1 to 2 times a year | Angi, 2025 data |
| General advice | At least twice a year | Bob Vila |
| Near oaks | 2 or more times a year | Angi |
| Near pines | 4 times a year | Angi |
| With guards | At least once a year | Angi |
The Big Picture Huntsville site says "Much of the City of Huntsville is covered in trees". No source read for this site gives the mix of oaks and pines by neighborhood, so the useful test is what's actually hanging over your roof. On Monte Sano, one travel writer describes "a canopy of hardwood forested trees", and the city's planting list for one park includes willow oak, overcup oak, red maple, sugar maple and river birch. That's one park's list, not a census of your street.
Planning around Huntsville's calendar
It's easy to assume spring is the rainy season. On the National Weather Service's 1991-2020 normals, it isn't:
| Period | Normal rain | Why it matters for cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| October | 3.56 in | Among the driest months |
| November | 4.25 in | Normal first freeze is November 8; a city fall cleanup notice is dated this month |
| December | 5.87 in | The wettest normal month |
| February | 5.11 in | Third wettest |
| March | 5.39 in | Second wettest; normal last freeze is March 24 |
Here's the reasoning, and it is reasoning, not a study: leaves fall in autumn, a city cleanup notice is dated in November, and the wettest month comes right after. A gutter packed with wet leaves going into December has the least room when the most rain is on the way. So if you only clean once a year, late fall after most of your leaves are down is a sensible time to pick. If you clean twice, a second visit before the spring storm months makes sense.
Worked numbers: what a year of cleaning costs
Assumptions
Angi's average of $167 per cleaning, and its per-foot range of $0.95 to $2.25. These are national figures from its 2025 data.
- Twice a year: 2 × $167 = $334.
- Four times a year near pines: 4 × $167 = $668.
- Once a year with guards: $167.
- By length, on 200 feet: 200 × $0.95 = $190, up to 200 × $2.25 = $450.
The per-foot math gives a higher number than the average per visit, which is one reason to get the price in writing for your own house. The gutter guards guide takes this further and asks whether guards pay for themselves.
What a skipped cleaning can cost
Cleaning is the cheapest line in gutter upkeep, and rot is one of the most expensive. Water that gets behind a gutter ends up on the fascia the gutter hangs from. HomeAdvisor says water damage to soffit and fascia is "typically caused by clogged gutters or poor roof drainage" and costs $10 to $23 per foot, which is $400 to $920 along a 40-foot eave. It lists dry rot repair at $500 to $4,000, which equals about 3 to 24 average cleanings at Angi's $167. An overflowing gutter also drops water at the foot of the wall, and the Department of Energy's Building America guide wants roof water ending "at least 5 feet from the foundation".
What goes wrong
- Clearing the trough but not the outlet. If water doesn't run freely down the downspout, the gutter will back up again. Ask that the downspouts get checked as well.
- Pushing debris to the curb. Huntsville's notice under Ordinance 21-311 makes the street-side curb gutter the owner's or occupant's job to keep clear on residential streets in 25 mph zones, with a 15-day notice and a hardship waiver available. That's street gutters, not house gutters, but dumping house gutter debris into the street creates the same problem.
- Missing what's in plain view. A soft fascia or a separating joint found during a cleaning is cheaper to deal with early. See gutter repair.
- Blaming clogs for everything. If the gutter overflows right after it's been cleaned, it's not a cleaning problem. See the size calculator.
What cleaning costs
National figures, with one Huntsville-labeled figure below them. Neither is a local contractor's price. Your written price is what counts.
| Item | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cleaning | $119 to $234, average $167 | Angi, 2025 data |
| Per foot | $0.95 to $2.25 | Angi, 2025 data |
| One story | $145 to $250 | Angi, 2025 data |
| Two stories | $180 to $360 | Angi, 2025 data |
| Three stories | $210 to $450 | Angi, 2025 data |
| Huntsville-labeled | $120 to $225, average about $190 for 200 feet. Method not explained | This Old House, undated |
When cleaning won't solve it
- Overflow right after a cleaning. Look at sizing or outlets.
- Drips at the same seam every time. That's a repair.
- You're tired of doing it four times a year. Look at guards, and pick a type that suits your trees.
- Water stands in the yard after rain. See downspouts and drainage.
Permits
Local permit pages read for this site don't mention gutter cleaning. Questions homeowners ask
How often should I clean gutters in Huntsville?
Angi gives 1 to 2 times a year on average, 2 or more near oaks, and 4 near pines. Bob Vila says at least twice. Let your own trees decide where you fall.
When's the best time of year?
No source sets a date for Huntsville. Reasoning from the rain normals, clean after most leaves are down and before December, the wettest month.
How often do I clean if I have guards?
At least once a year, per Angi. Guards reduce the job; they don't end it. This Old House says to inspect micro-mesh each season.
What does a two-story house cost to clean?
Angi lists $180 to $360 for two stories in its 2025 data. That's a national figure, and your own price comes from whoever looks at your house.
Should I check gutters after a storm?
Bob Vila says to inspect after big storms. If you find dents or damage, call your insurance agent first, and see hail and wind damage.
How this site helps: it sends your cleaning request to one independent local contractor. This site doesn't clean gutters.
